Cloud-based modelling for the 3-D printing of complex shapes

HSL is a high-tech centre specialising in the development of new products. This Case Study will enable a workflow for advanced shape optimization based on CFD and mesh morphing, both of which are numerically intensive and require the use of Cloud-based HPC. Complex shapes achievable through 3D printing are specifically tackled. The intake manifold of an internal combustion engine will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. The resulting optimal shape will be printed and compared with the original design offering the possibility of new ways of manufacturing combustion engines. Via a Cloud-based-HPC, pay-per-use, one-stop shop, HSL will be able to offer its customers new ways of designing products.
