The foundry business is an industry which is mainly dominated by SMEs and which forms a significant part of manufacturing industry both in Europe and in many developing countries. Today, in foundries, there is a total absence of an advanced control methodology covering the physical aspects of solidification, characteristic of cast iron foundry processes. This case study aims to support foundries in improving processes for the casting of iron through the use of HPC-based analysis software developed by the Italian SME ProService.
