CAD on the Cloud

1. Executive Summary (PU)

The objective of this experiment is to address how the functionality of a client-installed CAD system can be augmented and supplemented by special functionalities run as services in the Cloud. The approach will be tested in this experiment by adding functionalities run as Cloud services to a traditional CAD system. These functionalities will help a designer to define a turbine blade and the associated welds for its manufacturing. These functionalities are not available in general CAD systems, as they are needed only by a small number of users.

Consequently they are in general implemented as special CAD applications that are really expensive. The functionalities provided by this experiment will help the designer to refine the surfaces already defined, define the weld and design the assembly of the blade.

2. Description of the current (engineering and manufacturing) process (PU)
To produce the full expected design, the basic functionalities of the CAD application can be used:

  • reading external STEP Files,
  • creation & modification of surfaces,
  • creation of 3D curves,
  • creation of a pipe solid,
  • Boolean operations,
  • saving data or exporting STEP Files.

The current process represents a traditional use of CAD without any kind of automation. Consequently the current process involves a lot of interaction.

3. Description of the (engineering and manufacturing) planned process based on Cloud simulation services (PU)

The process to be implemented will follow a similar workflow as the current approach. However, the CloudFlow workflow will have a simpler user interface and provide more automation, e.g., the combination of the creation of the 3D curves and the pipe and Boolean operations are to be integrated into a single step as well as the generation of the missing surfaces according to the movement of the blade. These functions will be combined to an external service that will be loaded into the local CAD application through the Cloud.

When work on a local application is required, a link will be created to download some parts of the CAD application to a local machine and to control the usage & access rights. This part of the application has to be installed on the fly when the CAD system is already working and has to be removed from the memory when the CAD application is stopped.

For the involved engineer learning how to use the new functionality will be simpler compared to using the standard one due to the increased level of automation.
